The Hudson flight is going to continue to be praised probably forever because it is a historic plane crash ditching in water with many people on a commercial airline. I don't know why Brian Williams even asked Sully why people still talk about it, it is a historic survival that could have been tragic, we still talk about many plane crashes from decades ago to learn from them. One news report on the Miracle on the Hudson says they will rewrite training manuals because of what Sully did. And Sully's wife is right that people are happy for good news, it is nice to know people can be trained and equipped to pilot planes good enough to survive a crash, and not everybody is incompetent like minimum wage workers we meet everyday.

I agree with your statement on Sully. However your statement about min. wage workers is one of the most ignorant I've ever heard.I meet and talk to medium and highly paid people almost daily.I also meet many min. wage workers that could probably take over your job and be just as, if not more competent than you.

Captain Sully was doing the job he was trained for. Not a hero if you do that. No different that thousands of other airline pilots around the world, he just had the bad (or good) luck to show it. Thanks pilots.

Michele Obama and President Obqama are by far, the most historically significant people of the year. All you have to do is read through the blanks of the news reports to understand how inspiring their leadership is to a large segment of the American and world-wide population. While the press has been concentrating on the loud, boisterous, obnoxious minority of nay sayers, the rest of us appreciate the President's dedication to re-creating the ethical foundation for our international, economic as well as social endeavors. And Michele Obama is demonstrating the importance of family, nutrition, pursuit of knowledge, and dignity.

I am sorry, but I disagree. President Obama is an even worse President than Jimmy Carter. His leadership is in question by both sides, his values seem to have alienated over half the population in the last 12 months. Makes one wonder at who really voted for him.

As for Mrs. Obama, I am just glad the press has not followed her around like a puppy dog. I think the woman is a racist!

There is only one way to get this country back on the road to prosperity:

                1) Throw the bums out! Term limits for everyone in elected office or appointed by electees.

                2) Pas the Fair Tax (could only be done after #1)

                3) If we can't get the present congress to pass numbers 1 & 2, Then it may require a temporary take over by the joint chiefs in order to pass and enforce the changes.

Of course all the powers that be would scream all the way to the exit door, but I would trust the military more to make the necessary decisions and be willing to relinquish control to a new and much more representative governing body.

I was shocked to see Nadya Suleman listed as one of your Persons of the Year -- until I did a little research. What Matt Lauer fails to disclose to his audience is the fact that the rights to air "this documentary" were purchased by the BIO channel for re-broadcast in the US this December. The same Biography channel owned by A&E which is, coincidentally, also owned (in part) by NBC. But I'm sure that has nothing at all to do with NBC and Matt Lauer's obvious attempts to sanitize the facts surrounding Ms. Suleman's "story" and present her in a more sympathetic light.

It should be President Obama. No other President with the exception of F.D.R. has had to address so many issues at one time. Their are signs that we are recovering from a near collapse of our economy. What he does and does not do is the main focus of all Americans. We as Americans should support our President and not want him to fail. To say anyone else is more important in America is simply false. Some do deserve the honor of the Wow Factor!

Obama has certainly done something no other president has ever done: he has willfully and enthusiastically applied the teachings and principles of Saul Alinsky and Cloward and Piven in a transparent and lethal attempt to destroy the economy and free market and currency of America. Assuming America can survive his administration, he will go down as the most evil and anti-American president in history, and perhaps as our first communist president as well.

Well, I'm not sure who should be chosen but octomom? Please save us from the freaks and oportunists.

I do know that most of the people on the list could have been replaced with people that actualy serve thier fellow humans. Taylor is a doll but I think even she knows that there are many more deserving people. Don't think I'll be part of the vewing public this year.

remind me again why Obama should qualify here. All he's done is exactly what Bernie Madoff did but with taxpayer funding and if he's lucky he'll stay out of jail. He's like Robin Hood in reverse he steals from the poor (taxpayers) and gives to the rich (corporate heads) then has the nerve to say that those on social security get no cost of living increase because he already gave it to AIG, etc.

No way. Obama belongs in the list with Balloon Boy's parents Octomom and the rest of those irresponsible boobs

They are still crapping their pants over Sarah. By not having her on this list, the continue to insult our intelligence and try to make her insignificant, which makes her that much more powerful to "WE the people".

Glenn Beck should also be on this list since he's never been proven wrong by anyone in the administration and has actually gotten them to boot the radical commies they've been trying to sneak in.

Most of all ALLof the United States Military should be voted as Persons of the year. They, after all, continue to volunteer to keep us (strangers) safe, even with a traitor at the helm.

Capt. Sully Sullenbeger of the downed plan in the Hudson River deserves being named man of the year. His calm, precision, and focus on the immediate task at hand, under great pressure, saved many lives. After the accident, he made sure every passenger was rescued. I'd like him as my airplane pilot!

Wouldn't want him to be my pilot if there were birds of some sort in the area. He might not be able to avoid them like many other pilots can.

Entertainers are just that, entertainers. Sully is a hero but a person of the year. Person of the Year should be someone that has had a profound effect on the lives of Americans. Someone who restores faith in our country and reminds us of the qualities that our founding fathers had. Common sense, hard work, independence and love of freedom. In my mind, there is only one person who meets that criteria and that is Sarah Palin. Unfortunately, all the reasons cited above are exactly why the liberals hate her.

                                    Hey Joel. Hey Linda.

As I read this page, I noticed that ol' Jim's comment has got four votes while Joel's comment has garnered only one and poor. poor Miss Linda hasn't received any votes yet.

What does that tell you about the proportion of Newsvine posters who agree with you?

Sarah Palin is a complete and utter dumb@!$%#!!! She couldn't even complete one (1!?!) term as part-time governor of a piece of Redneck Hell state like Alaska and they think she's the answer to the miriad of problems that Cheney-Bush left stinking up the country. She's using all the "We love you, Sarah P!" morons for the MONEY!!!!! And they're lapping it up!!!

Why is it that so many people in this discussion of person of the year, as well as throughout many other forums, hate Sarah Palin and President Obama? I neither agree nor disagree with everything either one of them says they stand for. I find myself often more conservative, but Obama does have a few things that make sense as well, namely the economic policies and foreign policies that he borrows from the conservatives. Otherwise, they both have some pretty obvious flaws, but why hate them? People are afraid.......they are afraid of what they don't know. Palin is popular, charasmatic, the Republicans answer to Bill Clinton. Yet, she is divisive and strong in her stances, a positive to some and negative to others. Still, why fear her? Same for Obama. Sure, he is the leader of the free world, and I don't really think he's acting much like it. It's okay to be humble, but don't be a wimp. Stand up for American principles and ideals. We are not the enemy. We have sacrificed and helped nearly every nation on the face of the earth, and we don't receive equivalent help or financial support. So why do we get dumped on? Because whoever stands up becomes the target. Well, I would rather be the target and do the right thing, even if others find reason to dislike us, than to bow down to other foreign leaders and show weakness. We are not weak, and this president will not make us weak. He just makes himself look weak when he tries to be "humble." I like him, actually, as a man and as a president. I disagree with many of his policies, but I do not want him to fail, I want him to stand up strongly for what is right, or at least for what he believes is right, and not cower to anyone. But he is not to be feared, and neither is Sarah. Our republic is strong, we may be in a rough patch, but we will survive and come out ever stronger. The likes of Sarah Palin and President Obama will not take it down, or else we don't have much of a foundation to begin with. I choose to believe that either could be the person of the year based on news coverage, but if we base person of the year on contributions to mankind in the past year, give it to Ellen. She brings joy and hope, and even a bit of relief, to people around the country every day of the year, and in this day and age we could all use a little joy in our lives. It may sound like a silly answer, but think about it. Can you put a price on joy? It's invaluable and it's free to everyone, and Ellen is doling it out by amazing proportions. She is definitely deserving!

Sully is the person for me and not too far behind him is Susan Boyle. Our world is so full of itself...it's all about me. Susan Boyle's video was seen all over the world, again and again. Why, because for a short time the "preconceived notion" that only "beautiful people are of any value in our society" was blown out of the water. Sully made us believe, that there really are true heroes in the world. People wanted to soak up everything he said and hungered to find out "what made this man tic". To my knowledge the media was not able to besmirch his character. He was a hard working, do it by the book kind of guy, yet humbled by his own feat. In the interviews I saw, I never got the sense, he was playing to the media or exercising his "15 minutes of fame". For me, these two people, for a brief period, made the world a better place and we forgot about all the confusion, chaos and pain in our own lives and in the world and we all believed there really are true heroes and miracles.

I think, much like the bally-hoo'd Time mag pick of "You" (or everyone) a couple of years ago, I think the truly most important Person of the Year is the "Over Consuming, Over Paid, Overly Arrogant, Overly Lazy, Incredibly Greedy, Completely Self-Absorbed, Excessively Whiny American Baby BOOMER!!!"

From ol' Bernie Madoff, to the over-reaching, can't-afford-the-house-I bought-anyways ("Help, me I'm Stupid!"), from the Wasilla Hillbilly (You Betcha!) to the variety of other ME! ME! ME! freaks (read Octomom, Balloon boy parents, White House party crashers, Glen Beck, etc, etc)...well, what do they have in common?

                                      So again I nominate....

the "Over Consuming, Over Paid, Overly Arrogant, Overly Lazy, Incredibly Greedy, Completely Self-Absorbed, Excessively Whiny American Baby BOOMER!!!"

So you hold the moral high ground, James? Right. If ego-maniacal preening was of any value to humanity, you would definitely be in the running for Person of the Year!

And you really believe that people who rise up against tyranny and injustice accomplish nothing and are not worthy of recognition? Good thing the Founding Fathers didn't feel that way, don't you agree? Or, given your remarks, perhaps you don't agree. You're quite young, aren't you?

My person of the year would be the black guy here in Buffalo, N.Y. that jumped out of his car and took an old man's cane away from him and beat him almost to death with it and robbed him of $23 on a Sunday morning as the old man was on his way to church.  He is really showing what life is like in our cities.

Our president has did nothing but portray himself as a celebrity in the news and throwing big parties, all the time. Gee I wish I had the money to have big parties and not worry about the american people, the soldiers in iraq/afghanistan and take my time doing it all. OH and please do not let me forget that he has did NOTHING since he was elected. He want socialism, and GOVT contolled EVERYTHING.

I chose Sully because he is indeed an amazing hero who saved hundreds of lives with his skill, cool demeanor, and quick thinking. Having said that, though, had Sarah Palin (NBC? No WONDER she wasn't a choice!!) been on the list, I would have chosen her. Imagine! A politician with common sense, integrity, and a love of her country!! Obama shouldn't even be on the list. He panders to our enemies, buddies up with the likes of Hugo Chavez, et al, goes all over the world apologizing for this great country, shows a total disregard for what Americans want, and is clearly an Islam extremist sympathizer (to wit: refusing to refer to the war on terror as such, bringing the Gitmo scum to NY City for trial, etc.). It's clear he doesn't represent us and has a deep contempt for the U.S. I'll be interested to see how his defenders feel when they finally wake up and discover what he has in store for them!!!

The person of the year should be the average American for once again putting up with the criminal nonsense that our moronic and out of touch politicians have foisted upon us. Or not. These corrupt slimeballs couldn't commit their reprehensible acts of financial gluttony if the average American didn't elect them in the first place!

On second thought, I've changed my vote to the First Dog. This poor beast lives its life in close quarters with some of the most anti-American left wing nut job scoundrels the country has ever been forced to endure the stench of. And I am nearly certain that the dog is free of any Marxist-socialist leanings and has no part in the carefully calculated maneuvers that are destroying this country. He may not get a bogus Nobel, but he deserves a pat on the back--or maybe a gentle scratch behind his ear.

Gosh, how about Todd Palin, First Dude of Alaska. The very least he should be voted Dad of the year. I wish there were more men like him.

Must be the same type people who listen to Taylor Swift and thinks she can sing.
