Mystery at Lost Dog Road

When a well-liked young man lost his wife and son on a family outing, an entire town mourned. But there was somebody who suspected the tragedy was no accident. But will a widower's best friend come forward and accuse him of causing his family to fall over a cliff?

Dateline tonight started about 9:10 because of local programming. I didn't notice it and therefore didn't adjust my DVR accordingly. Is there any way I can see read the last 10 - 15 minutes of the episode.

That show ended really weirdly for me. It said "coming up next" with that woman that had some really important news for the case then it just basically ended. Anyone else have something like that happen? Was it supposed to be an hour and a half or something?

They didn't show the verdict. I thought the TV station must have cut it off early, but when I read the transcript of the show online - it was the same. No ending? I saw that he was found guilty but it was a weird way to end a show.

I figured dirt or it was hit with a bulldozer while it was being dug up.

I found this excerpt at the Dateline NBC site...transcript of show with Keith

And? Roger Brauburger has been sleeping rather well lately. He's discovered the joy of fatherhood. And a new marriage. He's clean and sober too. And Bob Duke - thanks to Roger's courage - is serving life in prison for the murder of his wife and son.

I'm so happy for Roger! He not only did the right thing, but was able to straighten up his life, even with this tragedy hanging over him, which would send even the strongest person in a downwards spiral. Congrats, I'm glad you're enjoying your wife and kids, and that you had the courage to go up to the police, even if you were risking getting caught or arrested due to your old bad habits; you saved many others' lives. Congrats to Crystal too who backed up Roger's story of Bob's unhappiness.

This was a sad chapter in our history here, I personally wish we could move past it and I hope this does it. This is the second time that I know of that it has been covered nationally Once on A&E. Its sad and sureal to see people you know personally rehearse this for entertainment purposes. The only positive is NBC Got some great shots of the town and vistas around here in Green River.

The first was Cold Case Files, and I think it is important because it shows how hard the SO and PD worked to solve this.

It would have never been a cold case if the Sheriffs department would have done a proper investagation in the beginning. The sheriff at the time was natorious for letting people he new off or sweeping things under the carpet for them.

Furthermore Bob Duke would still be free and possibly doing who knows what if he would have never contacted Roger, the murders would have remained closed as an acceident instead of a cold case. I admire Roger for comming forward it took a lot of guts. Law inforcement should have done a better job though.

My dad is LT Kevin Alvesteffer with the Sweetwater Sheriffs Department. Bob Duke was convicted of 2 counts of murder and four counts of soliciation to commit murder. He is serving six consecutive life sentences in the Wyoming Penitentiary. Though from what I hear he has some weird disease and won't make it to see 40. I saw him at the sentencing hearing and he looks nothing like what he did when the murders happened. It is a shame his parents still believe it was a joke and they weren't serious.

The reaction / denial from the parents is interesting. Such an imperfect world we live in. They managed to raise not one, but two boys who have no conscience. I am sure they have experienced a lot of pain, but their denial sounds like they are modelling narcissistic behavior which leads me to wonder how great of teachers they are (or were -- I hope). Sounds like they are not emotionally well.

And what happened to the brother who was in on the plot to kill the parents?

Way to go Roger! You are an inspiration -- I love how emotionally honest you have been. You look "so tough" on the outside, but I love that you have a soft, vulnerable, compassionate inside. This story really made me think about the "truth" in a person's character. The town's "bad boy" turned out to be sensitive, human, humane ... while the town's "role models" ... well ... were quite imperfect. A very good story. I have never heard of it before, but it merits retelling. So many lessons to learn in it ... appearance does not equal reality ... never judge a book by its cover.

Also, bravo to the brave girl who stepped forward at the end. Both you and Roger probably saved a few more lives!!!

Dogmom-1442118, I totally agree with you. How, after hearing the taped conversations, can the parents turn a blind eye towards the truth of their son being an awful person is beyond me. I understand parents' desire in wanting to back up their child but when there is proof (in recording) that their child is a backstabbing murderer who is planning a hit, they ought to be able to open their eyes to the truth and stop blindingly supporting him or believing it was all some sort of a joke.

I grew up with Mr. and Mrs. Duke as teachers. I was too young to really understand what was happening at the time, but I am so saddened for them. Even if they don't believe that their son was plotting to kill them, it must be awful for them to have to go through that and lose their family--and sons--forever. And while it was very interesting to see my town and hear the whole story on Dateline, I am saddened that they might have had to relive this tragedy by it being aired on national televison. Mr and Mrs Duke, my heart and prayers are with you, always.

You people are not going to like what I have to say but its not worth doing the right thing as shown on this episode of Dateline. Roger did the right thing and for that the law left him high and dry with no protection. Yes the killer got convicted because Roger did the right thing but the police kicked Roger to the curb as they wouldn't give him protection. Think about that if you're ever in the position to do the right thing. If you're willing to take a chance in getting killed to do the right thing go ahead, but I'm not!

It is too bad that Bob could not get the death penalty, instead for the next 40-50 years he will be getting 3 meals a day, medical care, card playing with his equals in his cell block, while costing taxpayers over a million dollars at least. It is too bad the young girl that was 13 at the time ole pedophile bob started making out with her, did not come forward a lot sooner, but at least the jury was no brain dead and was able to connect the dots and send Bobby away for awhile.

As a native of Green River, Wyoming - and also someone who spends almost every summer weekend at Flaming Gorge Reservoir, I knew in my heart that Liana and Erik had been pushed or thrown from that cliff from the moment their deaths were reported. Bob's claim that he had taken a wrong turn off Lost Dog road confirmed my suspicions. Anyone familiar with this area going on a family outing would not choose a route that is well known to lead to dry canyons and unstable cliffs. They would continue down the main Lost Dog road to the reservoir. I was very glad that Roger came forward and doubly glad when Crystal came forward to give Liana and Erik the justice they deserved. While it is sad that Bob's parents (whom I also had as teachers) cannot accept the truth of their son's plans, I also cannot imagine learning that my own child planned to kill me for my life insurance money. I think it would be much easier on my sanity to cling to the idea that it was a mistake, no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary.
